The History Museum

Founded in 1972, the Cascade County Historical Society administers a history museum, an archives, and a rather extensive educational program. The museum, which has over 95,000 objects in its permanent collection, offers changing interpretive exhibits that tell the stories of the individuals and groups who have added to the diversity of the Central Montana region. The archives is a repository for photographs, newspapers, records and ledgers. It also houses special collections of homesteading research, immigration records, and tax records. Established in 1953, the C.M. Russell Museum owns the most complete collection of Charles Russell art and personal objects in the world. The permanent collection is comprised of over 12,000 art works and objects. View one of the nation's finest collections of Western art and history in spacious, modern surroundings.

This museum has outstanding pieces from Russell contemporaries to works of such as world renowned artists as O.C. Seltzer, J.H. Sharp, E.E. Heikka, E.I. Couse, Winold Reiss, Olaf Wieghorst and others. The museum shop offers many unique gifts such as jewelry, Russell prints and fine Western books. The complex also includes the former home and log cabin studio of Montana's famous cowboy artist. Preserved as it was in the early 1900's, the studio includes displays of Russell's personal objects used as props and references for accuracy.

The Children's Museum of Montana is full of innovative, hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. It offers the most fun per square foot for the young and the young at heart.

Some museums ask their visitors not to touch the exhibits. 'Look with your eyes, not with your hands,' they say. That never happens at the Children's Museum of Montana. In fact, every exhibit in the entire museum is designed so that children can touch, poke, raise, lower, push and examine to their heart's content.

Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center

The interpretive center chronicles the journey, as well as the important experiences with Plains and Northwest Indians. Learn details of the plants and animals the expedition documented. Feel the expedition's disappointment at the impossibility of a Northwest Passage water route.

Venture outdoors with a ranger, or explore trails on your own. Several are wheelchair accessible. Enjoy scenic overlooks and native landscaping. Signs along the trails focus on important roles landscape and wildlife played in the expedition's time in Montana. Take a trail to neighboring Giant Springs State Park, site of another historic landmark along the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Before you leave, buy a memento in the Portage Cache store operated by the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Association. Or sign up for one of the Association's Lewis & Clark Institute adventures.
